Malaysia's First "Green" Taxi Stand in Kota Kinabalu!

The first "green" taxi stand in Malaysia would be built in Kota Kinabalu soon. The proposal to upgrade and renovate the existing taxi stand at Jalan Pantai in Kampung Air was disclosed to Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir by Kota Kinabalu Teo Chew Association (KKTCA) President, Sr. Chua Soon Ping. The project is the brainchild of a local architect, Ar. Sim Sie Hong of Innotech Design Architects Sdn Bhd, who proposed to rebuild the existing taxi stand using "renewable and green" building materials. Chua said the project is initiated and partly sponsored by the KKTCA together with several other companies as part of their corporate social responsibility for the city. The project is expected to be completed in three months' time, probably in June 2013.

The first ever "green" taxi stand in Malaysia will feature among others:-

   a. use of green building materials,
   b. powered 100% by solar,
   c. energy saving LED lightings,
   d. energy saving ceiling fans,
   e. free power socket for phone charging


Hopefully there will be more "green" taxi and bus stands to be built in the city centre whilst more corporations and private firms will come forward  and contribute to life-enhancing ideas such as this one.

London Planting 2 Million Trees By 2025

London Mayor Boris Johnson’s environmental adviser, Isabel Dedring, said climate projections show that the average summer temperatures in London could be at least 3.9C higher by 2080, and as much as 6C to 10C on the hottest days. 

A recent study suggested that increasing the amount of greenery in a city by 10% could offset the higher temperatures.

This caught the attention of Johnson, who’s aiming to increase tree cover across the capital by 5% by 2025.

The program, Leading to a Greener London, included detailed plans for green roofs and more trees in streets. A green roof features waterproofing and drainage layers topped with soil and plants.

Pakistan Breaks Tree Planting Record

Three hundred volunteers in Pakistan planted 541,176 mangrove trees (by hand) in one day, subsequently breaking the Guinness World Record for tree planting. 

The volunteers managed to do it all without the aid of mechanical equipment. They planted the mangroves in the Indus River Delta wetland ecosystem in the Southern Sindh Province of Pakistan.

WWF awarded Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi, Pakistan’s Environment Minister, the title Leaders of the Planet, which recognizes people who are making a significant personal contribution to sustainable development and conservation of the natural world.

“This is a wonderful example of partnership between government, local communities and the private sector for a common cause, for conservation.” – Richard Garstang, head of WWF Pakistan Wetlands Program.

The previous record holder was India for most trees planted in one day was India with 447,874 trees.

Green Initiatives in Resorts

Many of our visitors come to Sabah to see our natural heritage, trek in our lush green jungles, unpolluted islands and beaches, dive in our clear waters, and visit the man of the jungle, the orang utans. Eco-tourism and international visitors bring in hard currency to the country, impressions plays an important role when they tell their friends and family about the adventures they have in Sabah, Borneo.

The resorts that we have here are beautiful and provide world class amenities to their guests. So what are they doing to promote conservation in the management of their resorts? Many hotels have lush vegetation on their premises, trees, creeper plants, scrubs, hedges, and well kept grass. It is a welcomed experience to stroll through a beautifully landscaped resort.

Are they doing enough?

Are any of our resorts certified eco-friendly? Is there even such a rating, and should it be just as important as how many stars a resort rate? How stringent are the controls the resort management implement?

Next time you visit a resort, ask them about their green initiatives. Perhaps if their guests ask them often enough, it will send the message that Going Green matters, and leads to heightened awareness. Green Sabah says: It is time for our resorts to initiate the green efforts. Eco-friendly resort certification is a good move to encourage our resorts to maintain the sustainability of our environment. It is pointless if the resorts are only look beautiful and comfortable but they don't conserve the environment.
