M'sia still safe from cyclone threat, says expert

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 2, 2012): Malaysia is still safe from threats like a cyclone or typhoon, despite some countries in Asia having been hit by such disasters lately, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ibrahim Komoo said today.

The founder of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Institute (SEADPRI-UKM), however, said that Malaysia could not avoid from being hit by disasters like thunderstorm, flash floods and landslides.

He said that although Malaysia was not exposed to cyclones or typhoons, the Meteorological Department should inform the public about such disasters as a precaution.

"From my observation, the Meteorological Department has the tendency of making public announcements on incidents like earthquakes or tsunami, even if it happened outside the country or in faraway land," he told Bernama today.

The head of the Natural Resources and Environment Cluster of the National Council of Professors said the public was now more aware of natural disasters, especially after the 'Greg" tropical storm which hit Sabah in December 1996 and claimed more than 200 lives.

"After the tropical storm, people began to realise that typhoon is a disaster," he added. He also said the exposure by the media on such disasters also helped in providing better understanding and awareness on their effects to human lives.

"With high level of awareness among the society and preparations made by the Asean countries, more incidents on such disasters will be recorded and disseminated," he added. – Bernama

Although Malaysia is still safe from cyclone threat, we still need to take the precaution steps.
