Pairin: Don’t take for granted our abundance of clean water

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia, which is blessed with abundant clean water, should not take for granted that freshwater will always be available as the global warming is evidently taking its effect.
Opening the state-level World Water Day conference here yesterday, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said climate change in the country has shown negative impacts on human habitats including water resources.
“It will have a major impact on the availability of water for growing food and on crop productivity in the decades to come.
“The livelihood of the rural people as well as food security of city populations will be at risk…but the poor people will be the most vulnerable,” he pointed out.
Pairin, who is also Infrastructure Development Minister, said the theme for this year’s World Water Day – “Water and Food Security” – was timely to remind the people and the government to take serious measures with regard to the impact of global warming.
The future generations, he added, would experience shortage of water, which in turn would result in poor health.
And according to Pairin, almost a billion people in this world lived without clean drinking water, and many have to travel far to gather little water for their family.
In this respect, he said global warming should be taken seriously by all parties to ensure that the physical and human environment was not greatly affected.
“This is a task for all of us. Various incentives have to be offered by the authorities including the government and non-government organisations, our development partners and individuals to enhance our own self-awareness about the factors leading to global warming,” he said.
As such, Pairin called on the community to be sensitive to each other’s actions to avoid a more severe negative impact “and to ensure that the prosperity of this land remains for the next generations.”

Green Sabah says: Pairin is right, we should never take for granted that our resources will last forever. Global Warming is a problem faced by the world, and we should be prepared to face it.

The government is currently working on ensuring that food security is achieved by putting more attention on the agriculture and manufacturing industry.

This is true, POP. There is a saying that goes: 'You'll never miss the water until its gone.' We may have abundance of clean water supply now, but that does not mean we should waste them thoughtlessly.

Yes, creating awareness in order for the people understand the importance of conserving water and using water wisely is definitely needed. Hopefully through this blog, we are able to reach more people and inform them about their responsibility towards the environment.
