Sabah may use wind turbines as RE source

Published on: Thursday, April 26, 2012

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah may use wind turbines as an alternative renewable energy source if Pernec Corporation Bhd's vertical axis wind turbine pilot project here materializes.

Pernec Advertising and Media Department Head, Wan Mohd Rashdan, on Wednesday said the Government is looking at methods to reduce energy consumption and ways to renew energy. He said this is not only for environmental purposes but also to ensure enough energy is supplied to customers every day.

"Therefore, we may have an in-depth meeting with Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) regarding the wind turbine project since they too seem interested in the method," he said.

Sabah, he said, apart from Terengganu, has the right geographic factors to generate enough wind for the wind turbine and that SESB is also very supportive of energy saving efforts.

"However, the right person to comment on this is not here today so there is not much information that we can disclose as this is actually also our first time, introducing the products to SESB and many other industry players in Sabah in general," Wan explained.

He said this after giving a presentation on green technology and advertising methods, in conjunction with a Business Matching and Industry Talk at the Hyatt Regency, here.

He said the wind turbine emits low noise, can generate a capacity of between 300watt and 25kilowatt, and is suitable for windy and coastal areas or islands.

He said other methods taken up by the company is through the introduction of solar PV for industrial and domestic use, installing LED lights and system, as well as purchasing energy saving products and appliances.

Wan explained that the company also provides energy efficiency methods for industries, such as usage of power quality improvement and energy saving devices, energy management methods, LED lighting and hydrocarbon refrigerant.

"LED lighting can save up to 70 per cent of energy, while the hydrocarbon refrigerant helps to save up to 30 per cent of energy, is non-ozone depleting, non-toxic, non-global warming and non-corrosive," he pointed out.

"The hydrocarbon refrigerant also substitutes Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are gases used in refrigeration and the air conditioning industry.

These substances are ozone depleting and contribute to global warming, he said.

Pernec Corporation Bhd is a subsidiary of Permodalan National Berhad, and provides customers with customised, cost effective and reliable integrated solutions to meet their individual information, communication and technology needs.

Having Wind Turbine as power generating won't be just a dream if the Pernec Corporation Bhd's vertical axis wind turbine pilot project materializes. Hope that it will go smoothly.

This is indeed a more greener way to generate electricity. Not only that Wind Turbine is considered, some parts of Sabah are also considering using solar panels to resolve electricity shortage problems.

This is a sign that sustainable and renewable energy is gaining momentum in Sabah, perhaps we could even be the first state in Sabah to utilize green technology.

penggunaan turbin adalah baik, ia lebih mesra dan murah. Belanda adalah negara yang mengunakan kuasa ini.

I think Sabah is suitable to have these wind turbines especially on the seaside areas.

As demand for clean power generation to meet the world’s growing energy need increases

Limitation of the power output in high winds is necessary on all wind turbines, otherwise the turbine will be overloaded

I'm glad the Sabah government is meeting the people needs in greener, cleaner energy generation. All the best to Sabah's future under the current government.

apart from Pulau Perhentian in Terengganu, Sabah has the right geographic factors to generate enough wind for wind-turbine projects.

the only problem caused by this kind of renewable energy source is the noise from the wind turbine blades which is very loud and sometimes intolerable. but, since Pernec claims that the company's turbines emit low noise, so, it is very interesting to find out how they make this possible.
