Stop pollution if you love Sabah – Masidi

Earlier in his speech, Masidi said that while many are pointing fingers at the people living in illegal colonies at the Gaya Island for the rubbish problem, study showed that some 70 per cent are caused by those in the mainland, especially moving vehicles.

TAMPARULI: Have some self-discipline was the simple reminder from Datuk Masidi Manjun yesterday as he called on the public to stop polluting the rivers.
“If we love Sabah, we need to do something to stop polluting our drains and rivers. These are the waterways to the sea,” said the Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, adding that the burden should not be shouldered by the government alone.
Disclosing that a special task force has been set up to find solution to the rubbish-dumping problem in the state, adding that the decision was made following shocking discoveries following a study carried out at some rivers along the capital.
“We found that rivers in Likas, Darau and Inanam are among the biggest contributors of rubbish flow to the sea.
“These rivers flow to the sea, bringing the rubbish with it, and the waves would return the rubbish to the shore. That is why you would be able to see a lot of rubbish floating in the sea and resting at the seashore in the state capital,” he said.
The findings showed that some areas were categorized as bad, but optimistic Masidi believes that it is not beyond rehabilitation.
“The task force was formed by the State Cabinet to work with the relevant agencies to minimize rubbish problem in the rivers and perhaps to rehabilitate it. We will be holding our first meeting soon,” Masidi told reporters after launching the Zip Borneo, an adventure-tourism product, in Kiulu here.
Among other problems discovered were people building their houses close to the riverbanks, whose occupants have the tendencies to throw rubbish right from the windows to the river.
“We also found that some house owners who wish to renovate their houses would allow the discharge from their home straight to the drains.
“This would also contribute towards water pollution. I believe that we can solve this problem if we are willing to change our attitude,” he said.

Mereka yang suka membuang sampah merata-rata tempat memang tiada pengetahuan sivik. Saya rasa mereka patut dikenakan saman kerana menyebabkan kekotoran.

I agree with your suggestion, fine them so that they will remember this lesson forever, not to litter everywhere.
